What is a “cyber threat”?

A few (short) years ago, when someone bought their first computer, they would be warned to protect their machine from viruses and trojans and worms (oh my!). And then the mysterious term "spyware" was added to the list. And then "adware", along with keyloggers, hijackers, rootkits, and dialers. Not to mention spam, phishing, and pharming (which are not types of malicious software, but rather malicious usage of software).

Preventing malware

What should I do if I have a virus?

Log off the network (in an office environment) and disconnect from the Internet.

If your anti-virus program indicates that your computer is infected with a virus, but is unable to remove it, check these web sites for specific virus removal tools.

What about the “Good Times” Virus? What about the “Jdbgmgr.exe” virus?

Currently there is no “Good Times” virus, and the file jdbgmgr.exe is a legitimate part of the Microsoft Windows operating system. These are virus hoaxes. Hoax e-mail messages may seem innocuous, but they clog up our already over-spammed mailboxes, and cause unnecessary fear. Check these web sites for common virus hoaxes to avoid.
